Employer ReimbursementMany Oklahoma employers will pay your college tuition and possibly other costs. You might – or might not – have to pay upfront and get reimbursed later, earn certain grades, take a job-related major, go to certain schools, or limit expenses to $5,250 a year, the maximum tax-free benefit under most programs. You might be reimbursed for full tuition, fees, and books or only for some portion of those expenses. In some cases, you might even get to do your homework on the job.
Large employers are more likely than smaller ones to offer tuition assistance, but don’t assume anything without asking. Sometimes the programs are available but not publicized. And sometimes even employers that don’t generally offer tuition assistance will do it if you ask.
Employers have found that the programs help attract, develop and keep better workers.
Bonus for Aerospace EngineersIf you're an aerospace engineer hired since Jan. 1, 2009, your employer has an extra incentive to pay for your additional studies. The State of Oklahoma will cover up to half of your employer’s tuition reimbursement cost for your first four years on the job under the state’s Aerospace Industry Engineer Work Force Law. The law, designed to beef up the state’s aerospace work force, also gives tax credits to both you and your employer just for working and hiring in Oklahoma. See $5,000 Tax Credit at the Oklahoma Department of Commerce Web site. |
